The Blitz is Back! Win tickets for this Saturday's one-time-only show
Madison's original one-day theatre event is making its triumphant return, revamped and raring to go, this Saturday, June 23 at the Bartell Theatre downtown - and this time, it's musical.
"Blitz: The Musical" will hit the stage at 8:00 p.m. and brings a new twist to the 24-hours-from-page-to-stage format by requiring that each author incorporate local surf-rock outfit Venus In Furs into their short plays.
Veteran Blitz authors and actors will join forces with newbies to create this always incredible and raucous night of theatre that Dane101 is proud to sponsor. And we'll be giving away a pair of tickets to see the show to a lucky winner every day this week!

All proceeds from drink sales go directly to supporting the Bartell Theatre.

I developed a liking for the score of this little known and little seen show. There are some delightful numbers, but many of the voices do sound untrained. However, maybe that was what Lionel Bart, who wrote and directed the show, was looking for.

This is a little known masterpiece of British Musical Theatre by the composer of Oliver. Those of you who think Lionel Bart was a one-trick pony should take a listen to this gem. This music causes you to tap your feet as you listen and whistle the music once the album ends.

It's nice to see this CD finally re-mastered and reissued. Blitz! was Lionel Bart's follow-up to Oliver! It ran in London for 568 performances and has since largely been forgotten except for occasional amateur productions. This is a shame because it is a tuneful musical and very evocative of the blitz era and the people living through it.

The book of Venus in Furs is the height of fun sex stuff and strange, twisted relationships. It's a pure exploration of "feels and fantasy." It fits nicely beside other books I place beside it. This book is frankly adorable!

I've loved this show ever since I played Georgie Locke in an amateur production back in 2003. The songs are really good and its a really good story as well. It's a shame its never been revived in the West End.

Blitz! is set during the air raids of the Second World War in London. Voices of real people who sound like they were living during the Blitz. Even the star of the show does not always sound great, but she certainly comes across vividly.

This re-master brings out the clarity of the 1962 recording which is lost in my scratchy vinyl and background noise is very slight. The stereo imaging and reverberation are very typical of the 1960's but the score is excellent. Performances are uniformly good too, especially from Amelia Bayntun as the central character, Mrs Blitztein.

Venus in Furs is elegant, but doesn't engage the reader in the 19th century weirdeness of the book in the same way its contemporary translators managed to do. I found Venus in Furs to be romantic, erotic and very well-written. It is a literary classic that will speak to men with masochistic and submissive desires for centuries to come.

I was excited to see this by the reputation and the American title and all I saw was fifteen minutes of good film and then a bunch of stock footage,nonsensical dialogue, and BS plot development. I needed more dungeon scenes or more masochism, and less stock-footage/VO mental masturbation.
