Students for the Tenant Resource Center to revive Student Tenant Union

Students for the Tenant Resource Center is announcing a meeting to discuss the revival of the Student Tenant Union. This meeting will be held Thursday April 26th 7 p.m., TITU. STRC, in cooperation with the Tenant Resource Center, is organizing this meeting as a chance for students to form a union that can work towards goals of helping student renters.

The creation of this new group is in response to the issues the Students for the Tenant Resource Center has faced in recent years. Ten years ago the Student Tenant Union was separate from the Tenant Resource Center, however due to a request from the Student Services Finance Committee (SSFC), the two merged in order to prevent duplication of services to students. Earlier this year the SSFC denied funding to the Students for the Tenant Resource Center on the grounds that it was too closely linked with the Tenant Resource Center. Due to this loss of funding the following services will be discontinued starting July 1st:

o Dorm presentations about rental rights
o Answering of student emails
o Tabling at both unions
o Returning long distance cell phone calls from students
o Tenant Education week
o A possible cut back in housing counseling hours
o All other outreach specifically aimed towards students such as postering and chalking.

These services were only possible because of the funding from the university. In response to this, Students for the Tenant Resource Center has decided to revive the Student Tenant Union in an effort to keep such services available to the campus community.

Students for the Tenant Resource Center feels that the loss of these services will greatly hurt the student body. If students are interested in finding out how to save these services they are encouraged to attend the meeting on April 26th. If unable to attend, students may also contact campus outreach coordinators Elizabeth Gokey, and Alex George at
