What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters.

BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m))²

BMI Limitations

BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity, but it does have some limitations:

  • It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.
  • It doesn't account for factors such as frame size, muscle composition, age, sex, ethnicity, and other factors.

BMI is a screening tool, but it is not diagnostic of the health of an individual. A healthcare provider should perform appropriate health assessments to evaluate an individual's health status and risks.
